James Gunn talks about the choice to cut out a specific scene from the DC Universe episode’s Superman film trailers. Almost here is the much awaited premiere of the DC Cinematic Universe (DCU) franchise, Superman, and director James Gunn has been open with information about the movie thus far. Early in 2025, Gunn responded to the mixed response to a David Corenswet Superman trailer by stressing that the actor’s face was entirely CGI-free.
Gunn revealed in a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly that the theatrical edit would not show that particular view of Corenswet’s Superman flying. “Was that telling, when you address having to figure out how to pull off these mechanics of getting David to fly authentically?” When asked an EW question about his opinions on the response to the Superman image, Gunn answered. The co-CEO of DC Studios and director also revealed:
No, I very doubt that it was that much. The shot was incomplete since it was for a TV commercial. So the part he was flying in was really a snapshot of his face. In the view, a drone was shown flying against a real backdrop. Though they were put together in an odd manner, all the elements were real. I disliked the movie, thus the shot is not even in it. Usually, I pay close attention when I see a trailer; but, sometimes I let my guard down during ads and neglect to study every shot. I was rather blind to that one.
As is usually the case with most large-scale Hollywood blockbusters, opinions on some of Superman’s scenes will vary. Filmmaking is simpler said than done since many aspects are changed in post-production; Gunn’s comments on why he cut this particular Superman image are quite insightful. It is both predictable and quite reasonable that Gunn, the Superman filmmaker, decided to alter some features of the project after seeing the footage shot.
If anything, Gunn’s filmmaking experience is reflected in his openness about events or shots that fell short of expectations and the modifications done. If it wasn’t feasible, this view of Corenswet’s Man of Steel flying wasn’t required for the last cut. Thanks to the careful selection of its scenes, the last movie will, with any luck, be able to avoid some of the issues and complaints that dogged earlier DC releases.
Gunn gives the scene context by stating that the now-cut Superman scene ended up in an advertisement, so relieving viewers’ worries about it not showing on the movie. Apart from one incident, Superman’s marketing has been going good thus far, which helps to explain the expected high opening weekend box office performance. Fans are eager to see the outcome of the Man of Tomorrow’s cinematic comeback, less than a month away until Superman’s theatrical release.
